ZBAA/PEK - Beijing Capital - Cordis Hotel - October 2024

Immigration was slow again, we spent about an hour queueing at the transit visa desk and when the paperwork was completed we then went to the main immigration queue where they then analysied the documentation before allowing us in. then roughly two hours after arrival it was across to the Cordis, where we were allocated room 6011, which faces out over runway 36L/R with runway 01 being behind you and out of view.

Much of the detail below will already be known but I will repeat if for completeness.  The prevailing landing runways are 36L/R and 01 past the hotel with departures away from the hotel and they were in this configuration for the entire duration of our visit. There is no ground coverage and departures start tracking at about 2000ft after departure. With the opening of Daxang airport almost all of the China Southern and China Eastern flights have left Capital making runway 36L the quietest of the three runways for arrivals and departures, some departures will be missed as, has already been mentioned they don’t appear until about 2000ft into the climb. It is the preferred landing runway for most of the T2 operators there are some departures from this runway as well.

Runway 36R is the preferred departure runway for most of the T2 and T3 operators, the threshold can be seen from the Cordis rooms with a little bit of effort. The runway also handles some arrivals.

Runway 01 is primarily a landing runway for T3 but there are some departures and some T2 arrivals using the runway as well. The departures from this runway cannot be seen from the Cordis but the  arrivals can be seen from the lift lobby where there are large windows. Any departures will remain unseen.

Rooms facing Lake (West) are 6007, 6009, 6011, 6013, 6015, 6017, 6019, 6021, 6025, 6029, 6033, 6039, 6041, 6043, 6045, 6047, 6049. To keep your steps down to a minimum, rooms 6015, 6017, 6021, 6033, 6039 are near East windows, 6019 directly opposite.

On floor 5, 5001 is right by a end corridor window that faces North and gives a good overall view looking North. Not as good as the Presidential Suite, but will be a lot cheaper. 5003 and 5005 are close too……rest of floor goes 5007, 5009, 5009, 5011, 5015, 5017, 5019, 5021, 5023, 5025, 5031, 5035, 5037, 5039 for looking West and Lake views. Rooms 5015, 5017, 5021, 5033, 5039 are near East windows, 5019 directly opposite.

There are remote operated shutters on the outside of the hotel that are closed before, during and after Governmental flights, these block all views

At about 11PM runway 01 seems to close for operations and all arrivals move to the 36’s and continue to about 1AM when it gets quiet.

WMKK/KUL - Kuala Lumpur International - Sama-Sama - October 2024

Room 841 was allocated & had a view looking towards the Air Asia Terminal. Electronics required at what is a vast airport. I predictably stayed at the Sama Sama Terminal 1, not the airside transit hotels.  This is connected by under cover walkway or hotel golf carts to Terminal 1.  I requested and received rooms on high floors overlooking runway 14L/32R.  14L is primarily used for non-Air Asia arrivals and they were easy to see day and night, as ever electronic aids required in darkness.

The rooms with this view end in x01 to x09 and x60 to x67.  Most Air Asia arrivals use runway 15, the ‘far runway’, and windows in the hotel corridor enables these to be seen.  Rooms ending in x60/61 and x08/09 have windows directly opposite whilst those ending in x01/x67 are either side of the lifts, where there is a set of windows opposite.  These rooms minimize the amount of walking required, although preferences may be based on just how many Air Asia aircraft you need!  A handful of arrivals used 14R, but this was primarily departures, and these could not be see from the hotel.

Room 841 was used by Andy Vass on a previous visit & had a view looking towards the Air Asia Terminal. Electronics required at what is a vast airport. There is a spotting area on the 9th Floor of the hotel. Which looks to left hand of the 3 runways. It is easy to access if you’re on the 9th floor, which is premium. However the hotels website is somewhat confusing as to whether this is a perk of a premium room or accessible to all. If you’re in a room on the 8th, predictably, your room key won’t allow the lift to take you to 9.

The Terminal 1 viewing area remains open and also offers views across the airfield, although again electronic aids or a lot of patience with heat haze would be required to read off 15/33 traffic.  There is a small outdoor area at the front of Terminal 2 as well although this would only allow 15 arrivals and small amount of Air Asia parking to be seen.

KLAX/LAX - Los Angeles - H Hilton Hotel by Curio - October 2024

We stayed at the H Hilton Hotel by Curio, the selling point is the roof terrace which overlooks the whole of LAX and you won't miss anything. While all movements can be seen from here as well as the executive and cargo areas, it is best for photos for arrivals onto runway 24R. The hotel offers rooms with airport facing windows so movements can be seen from them as well. The place isn't cheap but the views are priceless. Food as you would expect isn't cheap but there's a Subway under the hotel, coffee shop as well. We took a walk to the Proud Bird one day, this took circa 35 minutes. Also we went the other way towards the In and Out burger, we didn't use the burger place, we dropped into the "Melody Bar and Grill", [18 minute walk] great food, great beers and a great vibe. If you want a good night then give it a go.
